A Monster Calls
A Novel by: Patrick Ness
From an original idea by Siobhan Dowd
Publication Date: May, 2 2011
The monster showed up just after midnight. As they do. But it isn’t the monster Conor's been expecting. He's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming... The monster in his back garden, though, this monster is something different. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor. It wants the truth. Costa Award winner Patrick Ness spins a tale from the final idea of much-loved Carnegie Medal winner Siobhan Dowd, whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself. Darkly mischievous and painfully funny, A Monster Calls is an extraordinarily moving novel of coming to terms with loss from two of our finest writers for young adults
This week I chose a book I think might be kind of Scarrrrryyyyyy OoooOoOoOhhhh! Actually I'm hoping that it's just the cover that is scary or else I won't be able to read this book at night HA! Since we are on the subject of the cover, don't you just love it? It looks like the monster is made out of corn husks and tree branches! I wonder if it's eyes are red! Love the hairdo buddy!
I haven't read anything by either of these authors, but I'm really going to have to check them out sometime soon!

These Things Hidden
by: Heather Gudenkauf
Publication Date: March 1st, 2011
Allison Glenn tried to hide what happened that night...and failed. The consequence? Five years in prison. Now she's free. But secrets have a way of keeping you caged...When Allison is sent to prison for a heinous crime, she leaves behind her reputation as Linden Falls' golden girl forever. Her parents deny the existence of their once-perfect child. Her former friends exult in her downfall. Her sister, Brynn, faces the whispered rumors every day in the hallways of their small Iowa high school. It's Brynn - shy, quiet Brynn - who carries the burden of what really happened that night. All she wants is to forget Allison and the past that haunts her. But then Allison is released, and is more determined than ever to speak with her sister. Now their legacy of secrets is focused on one little boy. And if the truth is revealed, the consequences will be unimaginable for the adoptive mother who loves him, the girl who tried to protect him and the two sisters who hold the key to all that is hidden.
Seems pretty interesting to me! Once again, not in my normal genre but ehh, I'm getting sick of my genre anyways :D

Waiting on Wednesday (7)
Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine where we share what books we are most looking forward to.
This week my book is FINALLY not part of a series! WooHOO! It also comes out next month so another plus.
Five Flavors of Dumb
by: Antony John
Publication Date: Nov. 11 2010
THE CHALLENGE: Piper has one month to get a paying gig for Dumb—the hottest new rock band in school.
THE DEAL: If she does it, she'll become manager of the band and get her share of the profits, which she desperately needs since her parents raided her college fund.
THE CATCH: Managing one egomaniacal pretty boy, one talentless piece of eye candy, one crush, one silent rocker, and one angry girl who is ready to beat her up. And doing it all when she's deaf. With growing self-confidence, an unexpected romance, and a new understanding of her family's decision to buy a cochlear implant for her deaf baby sister, Piper just may discover her own inner rock star.
This is definitely different than what I usually read but everybody needs a break from their usual genre or else it just gets boring! Wouldn't you agree?

This Side of the Grave
by: Jeaniene Frost
Publication Date: February 22, 2011
Danger waits on both sides of the grave…
Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they’ve triumphed over the latest battle, Cat’s new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance…
With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing. A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous “ally”—the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war. …to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined.
YAY! This is book 5 in the Night Huntress series and if you haven't read them yet WHAT are you waiting for?! Jeaniene Frost has definitely become one of my new favorite authors, and even though I kinda HATE Cat (yeah yeah I know she's the main character but she's so annoying sometimes!), I still love all her other characters.
Also if you haven't heard Frost has extended Bones and Cat's story to 9 books and also has a series in the works for one of my absolute favorite characters, Vlad. You can read more about it on her website here.

Tyger Tyger
by: Kersten Hamiltion
Publication Date: Nov. 15th 2010! SO CLOSE!!
From Goodreads:
Teagan Wylltson's best friend, Abby, dreams that horrifying creatures--goblins, shape-shifters, and beings of unearthly beauty but terrible cruelty--are hunting Teagan. Abby is always coming up with crazy stuff, though, so Teagan isn't worried. Her life isn't in danger. In fact, it's perfect. She's on track for a college scholarship. She has a great job. She's focused on school, work, and her future. No boys, no heartaches, no problems.
Until Finn Mac Cumhaill arrives. Finn's a bit on the unearthly beautiful side himself. He has a killer accent and a knee-weakening smile. And either he's crazy or he's been haunting Abby's dreams, because he's talking about goblins, too . . . and about being The Mac Cumhaill, born to fight all goblin-kind. Finn knows a thing or two about fighting. Which is a very good thing, because this time, Abby's right.
The goblins are coming.
Super exctied for this one. I haven't read too many books with goblins in them. Except of course Lord of the Rings and ya know Spiderman had The Green Goblin, and he wasn't all that bad. Goblins always seem to be getting a bad rap though, which is too bad because they seem to be talented in quite a lot of things ranging from weapon making to being ugly. Poor guys! Has anyone even tried to talk to them? Maybe they are really gentle creatures once you break through that protective wall they have put up around themselves!
Maybe......

Where She Went
By: Gayle Forman
Publication Date: April 19, 2011
From Goodreads:
It’s been three years since Adam’s love saved Mia after the accident that annihilated life as she knew it . . . and three years since Mia walked out of Adam’s life forever.
Now living on opposite coasts, Mia is Julliard’s rising star and Adam is LA tabloid fodder, thanks to his new rock star status and celebrity girlfriend. When Adam gets stuck in New York by himself, chance brings the couple together again, for one last night. As they explore the city that has become Mia’s home, Adam and Mia revisit the past and open their hearts to the future—and each other.
Told from Adam’s point of view in the spare, powerful prose that defined If I Stay, Where She Went explores the devastation of grief, the promise of new hope, and the flame of rekindled romance.
Ooh pretty cover! I usually think that covers with actual real people are kind of cheesy but I totally love this one and the one from If I Stay. I can't wait for this one to come out and am very interested to hear the story from Adams point of view.
yippie!!

Ghost Story
By: Jim Butcher
Publication Date: April 5, 2011 :( Ugh so long to wait!
From Goodreads:
When we last left the mighty wizard detective Harry Dresden, he wasn’t doing well. In fact, he had been murdered by an unknown assassin. But being dead doesn’t stop him when his friends are in danger. Except now he has nobody, and no magic to help him. And there are also several dark spirits roaming the Chicago shadows who owe Harry some payback of their own.
To save his friends—and his own soul—Harry will have to pull off the ultimate trick without any magic...
This is the 13th book in the series.
Yes Yes YES!!!! Oh man, Jim Butcher never fails to bring on a good story. NEVER. Don't you just love the cover? I know I do. You probably can't see it, but if you click the picture you'll notice that the tombstone has Harry Dresden's name on it. Creepy? Hell yes!
Harry Dresden is definitely one of my most favorite book characters. He's witty, sarcastic, smart, loyal, and well, as far as I'm concerned, Hot as Hell!
Just a few things I'd like to mention...My first gripe...is to the artist of the cover art. What's with the hat? Seriously, Dresden does not wear a hat! Stop it with the hat thing on every cover!!
Also, this newest cover is a slight improvement, but can't Dresden do something else besides carrying his stick and wearing that dumb hat?
My second gripe goes out to ROC Fantasy publishing.
Who's stupid ass idea was it to make the newest paperbacks half and inch taller? WTF Do you know how stupid this looks next to all my normal sized books? Not to mention they feel flimsy as hell.
My cat does not approve...
Alas, I shall be a fangirl till the end <3

Pale Demon
By: Kim Harrison
Publication Date: February 22 2011
From Goodreads:
Condemned to death for black magic and shunned, Rachel Morgan has three days to somehow get to the annual witches convention in San Francisco and clear her name. If she fails, the only way she can escape death is to live in the demonic ever after . . . for ever after.
Banned from the flight lists, Rachel teams up with elven tycoon Trent Kalamack, headed for the West Coast for her own mysterious business. But Rachel isn’t the only passanger along for the ride. Can a witch, an elf, a living vampire, and a pixy in one car survive for over 2,300 miles? And that’s not counting the assassin on their tail.
A fearsome demon walks the sunlight, freed after centuries of torment to slay the innocent and devour souls. But his ultimate prey is Rachel Morgan. While the powerful witch with nerves of steel will do whatever it takes to stay alive, even embracing her own demonic nature may not be enough to save her.
I LOVE this series. I discovered Kim Harrison's books while I was commuting to college. Instead of doing homework, I read about Rachel Morgan. I hate hate hate that they went to hardcover but I am such an extreme fangirl of this series that I buy them anyways. It is the only series I buy in hardcover. Even my beloved Dresden files must wait a whole friggin' year for the paperbacks to come out before I purchase them ( and don't even get me started on the new covers, or the fact that the new books coming out in paperback are half and inch taller then the previous paperbacks GRR!!!!!!!!)
A lot of people gripe about how Rachel hasn't grown in any of the books and that she still makes all the same mistakes but I don't care. As long as I get my yearly dose of Jenks and Algaliarept I'm happy :)
This is the tenth book in the series and these are definitely not stand alones. I highly recommend starting at the beginning, plus, then you have something to keep you busy until February!
The book order is as follows: Dead Witch Walking, The Good, the Bad, and the Undead, Every Which Way but Dead, A Fistful of Charms, For a Few Demons More, The Outlaw Demon Wails, White Witch, Black Curse, and Black Magic Sanction. Phew!
